What to actually buy first if you want to light small parties, and what you can safely skip.
This surprises everyone: the best first purchase is not a light, it is a haze or smoke machine. Beams are invisible without particles in the air. A cheap machine plus a bottle of fluid will make four lights look like eight. Skip it and even expensive fixtures look flat.
Small RGB or RGBW PARs are the workhorses. Four of them — two per side — give you colour across a room and they respond instantly to the beat. Buy four identical ones rather than two nice ones: symmetry matters more than quality at this level.
A derby or a small moving head adds the movement that PARs cannot. One is enough. Two identical ones, mirrored, look far better than two different ones.
Budget for DMX cables (they daisy-chain from fixture to fixture) and a terminator for the last one in the chain — a cheap plug that prevents signal reflections. For control you have two options: a physical DMX controller, or a laptop with a USB-DMX interface and software. The laptop route is usually cheaper and far more flexible.
The habits matter more than the gear — phrasing, restraint, knowing when to blackout. All of that transfers directly from a simulator to a real room, and costs nothing to learn.

Total: about $295, and it makes a real room look like a real party. Notice what is missing: any moving head. At this budget a mover is a toy that steals half your money; four PARs plus haze is an actual lighting system.
Next money goes to: a used beam moving head (one is enough — symmetry is overrated and two cheap ones cost the same as one decent one), a USB-DMX interface that speaks the Enttec Pro protocol so software can run your rig, and a proper strobe if your music calls for it. In that order.
LED rigs sip power — each PAR draws maybe 30W, the haze machine 400–700W when heating. The math that matters: a standard household circuit gives you roughly 1,800W (US, 15A×120V) or 2,300–3,600W (230V countries). Your whole starter rig fits on one circuit with room to spare; the moment you add old halogen blinders (650W+ each) you start counting. Haze machines pull their big load in bursts when reheating — put the hazer on a different socket than your amp if the breaker ever complains.
Club and production companies sell working gear cheap when they refresh inventory — that is where $400 movers become $120. Rules: see it powered on, run every color and the strobe channel, listen for grinding in pan/tilt motors (worn belts are a cheap fix, dead drivers are not), and ask why it is being sold. "Upgraded the rig" is fine; "not sure what's wrong with it" is a parts unit priced as working.
Lights on the floor light ankles. The cheapest respectable mount is a pair of speaker stands with a crossbar (a "T-bar") — around $60 used, holds four PARs at head height. Wall shelf brackets work in a permanent room if you own the walls. Skip truss until someone pays you; it is heavy, needs transport, and a T-bar does the same job at this scale. Whatever you mount on, add a safety cable through each fixture's bracket — a $4 wire loop that turns "the clamp loosened" from an injury into an anecdote.
Do I need a lighting console? No. Software plus a USB interface replaces a console at this scale, and this simulator teaches the operating instincts for free before you spend anything.
Smoke or haze? Haze. Smoke is a cloud that says "look, a machine"; haze is an invisible mist that makes every beam visible. It is the highest-value purchase in all of lighting.
Are battery-powered uplights worth it? For weddings and rented venues, absolutely — no cables across walkways. For a fixed room, wired PARs are cheaper per light.
